Gallery Review: Earth Song Refrain

Art Against Racism is on a transformative mission: to employ the arts, including visual art exhibitions, in the struggle to eradicate racism and white supremacy, which deeply affect Black and Brown communities and ripple through the entire nation. AAR exhibitions are designed to raise awareness, encourage critical thinking and provide artists opportunities to grapple with relevant issues.
AAR extends the life of its in-person exhibitions, through on-line galleries. One such exhibition is titled “Earth Song Refrain: BIPOC Artists on the Climate and Environment.” The exhibition was inspired by Michael Jackson’s powerful environmental anthem “Earth Song” from his 1995 album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. This exhibition calls for awareness and action to protect the Earth, serving as a heartfelt plea for environmental consciousness and a reminder of how all life on Earth is deeply connected.
This group exhibition is a heartfelt testament to the legacy of Black and Brown artists who have long used their art to confront humanity’s behaviors and its profound relationship with the Earth. It captures the fragile beauty of our threatened planet and lays bare the harrowing consequences of global warming, environmental racism, and climate change. Through their powerful creations, these artists cry out for justice, resilience, and a deep, abiding love for the world we all share. By centering the stories, voices, and lived experiences of people of color, this exhibition aims to spark urgent conversations and deep reflections about the heartbreaking reality: the climate crisis disproportionately devastates communities of color across the globe. It’s a call to recognize and act on the profound injustices our communities face
One of the pieces on display is Sejal Ashar’s “Bowl of Beauty”, which is a captivating mixed-media piece. This artwork is a profound exploration of the delicate beauty of our planet and the urgent need to address environmental challenges. Ashar combines materials, textures, and vibrant colors to create a visually stunning representation of a bowl filled with natural elements. The intricate details and layers of texture symbolize the fragile state of our environment and the impact of human actions on the Earth’s natural beauty. Through “Bowl of Beauty,” Ashar invites viewers to reflect on the importance of preserving our planet and taking collective action to combat climate change. The artwork serves as a reminder of the connection of all life on Earth and the responsibility we all share to our environment and communities.
Another piece on display is “Melting #3” by Spriha Gupta which is a striking piece that captures the alarming reality of climate change through the lens of melting ice. Gupta, a narrative mixed- media artist, uses a combination of forms, textures, and vibrant colors to create a visually compelling representation of this environmental issue. The artwork features layers of texture that mimic the appearance of melting ice, symbolizing the fragility and vulnerability of our planet’s polar regions. Gupta’s use of color and form evokes a sense of urgency, inviting viewers to reflect on the consequences of global warming and the urgent need for action to protect our environment. Through “Melting #3,” Gupta emphasizes the interconnectedness of all life on Earth and the importance of preserving our natural world for future generations. Her powerful creation serves as a reminder of the impact of human actions on the environment and the collective responsibility to address climate change.
